Pipes Banging at 3 A.M. and One Bedroom Still Freezing? Radiator Repair in Hempstead, NY.
That noise has a cause, and it is almost never the boiler. If you need radiator repair in Hempstead, NY, you need a crew that works on steam, because much of this Village heats with cast iron radiators on one pipe steam, and plenty of plumbers will not touch steam. We will. We have been fixing steam heat here for 20+ years.
Steam is a system. The vents, traps, valves, and pitch matter as much as the boiler. Get those right and the house goes quiet. Call +1 (516) 969-2004 and talk to a plumber who knows steam, not a call center.

Warning Signs Your Steam System Is Complaining
If your house does any of this, it is asking for help.
!Banging and water hammer.
Sounds like a hammer on the pipes. That is water sitting where steam wants to run.
!One radiator cold while the rest roast.
Trapped air or a failed vent keeps steam out of that one radiator.
!Vents hissing nonstop.
A stuck open vent throws steam, and the fuel that made it, into the room.
!Water spitting out of a vent.
The boiler makes wet steam, or its water line rides too high. Neither fixes itself.
!The boiler fires, stops, fires again.
Short cycling. Pressure climbs too fast, the burner quits, far rooms starve.
!Rooms heat unevenly.
The front roasts, the back bedroom never catches up. That is balance, not boiler size.
!Fuel bills climbing.
Steam escaping through tired vents and traps is heat you paid for, never felt.
Why Steam Acts Up in Hempstead Houses
About 55 percent of Village homes went up before 1960, per U.S. Census Bureau housing data, and most still heat the way they were built to: boiler below, cast iron radiators above, steam doing the carrying. Those systems are not worn out. They are out of tune.
The physics, in plain English: before steam can heat a radiator, it has to push the air out of the pipes and radiator. That is the vent's whole job: air out, then it snaps shut when steam arrives. Fail shut, steam never arrives. Fail open, it escapes into the room. The U.S. Department of Energy says the same in its heat distribution guide: a clogged vent keeps a radiator cold, and a stuck open vent wastes fuel.
Two pipe systems sort things with a steam trap at each radiator. A trap that fails open blows live steam into the returns, and the whole house pays. Pipes cause trouble too: seventy years of settling sags a run out of pitch, water pools in the low spot, and steam slams into it. That bang is water hammer. Then there is the last boiler replacement, piped by a crew that treated steam like hot water: header too low, no proper Hartford loop. That boiler makes wet steam from day one, and everybody blames it. The boiler is fine. The piping is wrong.

Steam or Hot Water? How to Tell
Look at the boiler. A glass sight tube with water about halfway up means steam. So does a gauge that barely moves, because house steam runs under 2 psi, and a small silver vent on each radiator. A circulator pump, an expansion tank, and a gauge around 12 to 15 psi cold means hot water, bled with a small key, not vented. The fix differs because the problem differs: steam trouble is mostly air and venting, hot water trouble is mostly flow. If the boiler itself misbehaves, start with our boiler repair page. If it runs and the rooms are wrong, stay here.
What We Fix: Steam Heating Repair, Radiator by Radiator
Bring us the noise. We will find where it lives.
Radiator air vents.
We fit the vents steam men trust: Hoffman, Gorton, Maid-O'-Mist, and adjustable Heat-Timer Varivalve vents. Right size, right room.
Steam traps.
We test every trap on two pipe systems. Failures get rebuilt or replaced.
Radiator valves.
Leaking stems, valves seized half open, valves that will not shut. Repacked or replaced.
Pitch correction.
We rehang sagging runs and reset the slope so water drains back to the boiler.
Main line vents.
The big basement vents decide how fast steam reaches far rooms. Dead mains are why the back lags.
Low water cutoff flushing.
We flush the sludge out until the water runs clear, so the safety can do its job.
System balancing.
One pipe steam gets balanced room by room: slow vents near the boiler, faster vents far away.
Leaking sections and unions.
Cracked sections, weeping unions, rust at the feet. We will tell you straight if yours is worth saving. Cast iron usually is.

Should You Convert Steam to Hot Water?
Every few years a homeowner asks us to rip out the steam and start over. The straight version: new piping through finished walls, new radiators or baseboard in every room, weeks of open walls. In the Village's prewar and 1950s houses that runs into the tens of thousands and rarely pays back in fuel savings. A balanced steam system heats beautifully, and cast iron holds heat the way baseboard never will. Spend the money on venting, traps, and pipe insulation instead. Conversion only makes sense during a gut renovation. If that is you, call +1 (516) 969-2004 and we will run both sets of numbers first.
What You Can Do Right Now
Leave the boiler water alone. Draining a steam boiler on a whim harms it: every refill brings fresh water full of oxygen and minerals that eat it from inside.
Check your radiator valves. On one pipe steam a valve has two correct positions: all the way open or all the way closed. Halfway traps water inside the radiator, and trapped water bangs and gurgles. A room running hot is a vent problem, not a valve problem.
Keep your hands off the pressuretrol, the control that stops the burner. House steam is happiest under 2 psi. Turning it up will not heat the cold bedroom; it makes the banging worse and burns fuel.
Glance at the sight glass now and then. Water should sit about halfway and hold steady during a firing. If it bounces or disappears, shut the system down and call us. The bedroom that never heats is also the room whose pipes freeze first. Our frozen pipe repair page covers that end of the same problem.
What Your Neighbors Say
Every review below is from a real call here in the Village. Our rating across review sites: 5.0.
Our pipes banged so loud the baby woke up every time the heat kicked on. Another company said new boiler. These guys changed vents and fixed a sagging pipe. Quiet house, same boiler.
Back bedroom was an icebox for six winters. One balancing visit later, every room heats.
They know steam. That is the whole review. Nobody else I called would look at a one pipe system.
Radiator leaked at the union and stained the ceiling below. Fixed the same day, price matched the phone quote.
Recent Work in Hempstead Village
The Boiler That Was Never the Problem
Every firing sounded like somebody working the pipes over with a hammer, worst at 3 in the morning. Tenants were threatening to move. Another company had quoted over $9,000 for a new steam boiler, calling the old one shot.
We listened through one full cycle first. The basement main vent was dead, two radiator vents were wrong for their rooms, and one run had sagged into a trap. New vents, run rehung, cutoff flushed. Total bill: $575.
The boiler stayed. The house went quiet, and the replacement money stayed in the bank.
The Back Bedroom That Finally Heats
The back bedroom of a 1952 cape ran about 10 degrees colder than the front rooms. The family had priced out electric baseboard. The room had become storage.
The radiators near the boiler wore oversized vents and hogged every firing. The back bedroom's vent was painted shut. We resized vents room by room, freed the painted vent, and proved it over two full cycles. Total bill: $340.
No space heaters on the electric bill, no baseboard install, and the room is a bedroom again.
