Home / Boiler Installation
That Old Boiler Will Not Survive Another January. Boiler Installation in Hempstead, NY.
Every fall we meet the same homeowner. The boiler is 25 years old, the fuel bills climb every winter, and the plan is to nurse it through one more season. Then January comes, the unit quits on the coldest night of the year, and the replacement happens in a panic. Boiler installation in Hempstead, NY does not have to go that way.
We are Hempstead Plumbing Pros, and boiler installation Hempstead NY is the job we plan with you before it becomes an emergency. Most Village homes went up in the 1940s and 1950s, when boilers were coal conversions with an oil tank in the corner, and plenty of those systems are still down there working. We size the new boiler off your house, not the old nameplate, quote it flat in writing, and pull the Village permit. Call +1 (516) 969-2004. A plumber answers, not a call center.

Thinking About Replacing It Before Winter Does It for You?

Call +1 (516) 969-2004Warning Signs the Boiler Is Done, Not Tired
One sign is a warning. Two or three together mean money spent fixing it buys weeks, not years.
!Past 20 years old.
Cast iron lives long, but past 20 years every repair buys less time than the one before.
!The second breakdown this winter.
One failed part is a repair. The second failure in a season is a pattern, and patterns do not fix themselves.
!Fuel bills climbing on the same habits.
Same house, same thermostat, bigger bills. A tired boiler burns more fuel for the same heat.
!Rust at the base, water on the floor.
Rust streaks and puddles mean the sections are giving up from the inside.
!Rooms that never warm up.
One cold bedroom is a valve. Half the house cold while the boiler runs flat out means it can no longer carry the load.
!Banging, kettling, short cycling.
Noise is the boiler complaining about scale, pressure, or flow. It gets louder every season.
!A cracked heat exchanger.
That one is not a repair conversation. A crack means replacement, a safety call, not a money call.
Why Boiler Installs Go Wrong in Hempstead Houses
About 55% of Village homes were built before 1960, and the median Village home went up in 1958 (U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey). Those houses were insulated to 1958 standards, which is to say barely. A bad install in one of them is almost never the boiler's fault. It is the shortcuts around it.
The nameplate trap. The fastest quote in this business copies the size off the old nameplate and orders the same thing. Old boilers were oversized on purpose, sometimes by half, because coal era sizing was guesswork. An oversized new boiler short cycles, wears its controls out early, and burns fuel heating water nobody needs heated.
Steam is piping, not just a boiler. The near boiler piping, the drop header height, the equalizer, and the Hartford Loop decide whether a new steam unit heats quietly or bangs like a drum. Get the piping wrong and even a good boiler delivers wet steam, water hammer, and two cold rooms. This is the mistake general plumbers make in Village colonials, and the one we get called to correct.
Venting in a tight basement. Plenty of 1947 stock has a low ceiling, a tired masonry chimney, and no good path for a flue. A cast iron unit may need a chimney liner. A condensing unit vents through PVC out the side wall, which solves the chimney and adds a condensate drain to plan. That decision belongs in the quote, not in a surprise on install day.
Local Boiler Installation Needs in Hempstead
A boiler swap here runs on Village paper. The permit for a replacement is $25 under Village Code Chapter 100, and we pull it before the work starts, because unpermitted work draws triple fees. Gas fired work follows Article V of the same chapter: the new gas piping gets a 3.5 psi air test witnessed by the Plumbing Inspector before National Grid sets the meter. The Village also limits gas meters, one for a single family house and two for a two family, which matters in the Village's many two family homes. Converting from oil? Your old tank has to be closed under Nassau County Department of Health rules, pumped out, cleaned, and removed or filled in place, county notice filed first. All of it lands on your written estimate as its own line.

Four Ways to Heat the House. One Fits Yours.
Same basement, four very different answers. Here is the honest version of each, including the one we talk people out of most weeks.
| Option | Upfront cost | Efficiency | Lifespan | Maintenance | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cast iron boiler (Weil-McLain, Burnham, Peerless class) | $4,500 to $9,500 installed | 80% to 87% AFUE | 25 to 30 years | Service once a year | Steam systems, most Village homes |
| Condensing wall hung boiler | $7,500 to $13,000 installed | 90% to 96% AFUE | 15 to 20 years | Yearly service, condensate care | Hot water systems, no chimney |
| Combi boiler (heat and hot water in one) | $7,500 to $13,000 installed | 90% to 96% AFUE | 12 to 15 years | Yearly service and descaling | Small homes, one bathroom |
| Cast iron boiler with indirect water heater | $4,500 to $9,500, plus $1,800 to $2,800 for the tank | 80% to 87% AFUE | 25 to 30 years | Yearly service, tank has no burner | Two family homes, busy bathrooms |
Two honest notes. First, the combi. It looks clever on paper, one box doing heat and hot water, and in a small one bath home it can work. In a two family, or a house with two bathrooms running at once, it runs short on hot water, and the proprietary boards in these units mean a breakdown can wait days on a part. We install them when they fit. We talk more people out of them than into them.
Second, the setup we install most here is row four: a cast iron boiler with an indirect water heater tank. The boiler does the heating, the tank stores the hot water, and both outlast everything else on this table. The tank side is covered on our water heater installation page.
How We Install: Sized, Piped, Permitted
Five steps, same order every time, so you know what happens before we knock.
Heat loss sizing first.
We measure the house, the radiators, and the insulation you actually have, and size the boiler to the load. Never the old nameplate.
Written flat price.
One number for the whole job, permit and haul away as their own lines. You approve it before anything is ordered.
Permit pulled, old unit out.
We pull the $25 Village boiler permit, drain the system, and haul the old boiler away the same day.
Near boiler piping done right.
On steam, the drop header, equalizer, and Hartford Loop get piped the way the manufacturer drew them. On hot water, circulators and the expansion tank get set to the new load.
Commissioning and walkthrough.
Combustion check, controls check, every zone and radiator tested room by room. If a radiator or trap needs separate work, we show you on the spot; that is our radiator repair side. Then we walk you through the new controls before we leave.
Boiler Installation Costs in Hempstead, NY
Real ranges for Village homes, from the jobs we run every heating season. Where a job lands inside the range is set by your house, your venting, and your piping, not by a menu.

| Steam boiler replacement | $8,000 to $18,000 |

| Village of Hempstead boiler permit | $25, pulled by us |
Typical ranges. Your final price is confirmed in writing before we start.
A conversion adds its own work, the gas run, the tank closure, and the county paper, which is why no honest installer quotes one as a single all in number over the phone. The full Village price picture lives on our plumbing costs page. Want your number? Call +1 (516) 969-2004.
The Rebates Are Gone. Here Is What Is Left
If a quote you got this year leans on a federal tax credit, check the date on it. The Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit, the 25C credit, ended for anything placed in service after December 31, 2025, per the IRS. Boilers installed in 2026 get no federal credit. Anyone still selling one is working off last year's script.
The utility money moved the same way. National Grid's residential gas rebates on Long Island ended, with the last HEAT program applications taken October 31, 2025. There is no gas boiler rebate to chase in 2026, and we will not pretend otherwise on an estimate.
What is left is real, and it points a different direction. New York put its money behind electrification and income eligible upgrades: NYSERDA's EmPower+ program covers up to $14,000 for income eligible households, and the state's Sustainable Futures figures put up to $10,000 toward a heat pump and $5,000 toward a heat pump water heater for qualifying homes. PSEG Long Island adds a rebate of up to $1,200 on a heat pump water heater. For some Village homes, that math makes a heat pump worth pricing next to the boiler quote. We will run both numbers with you.
For most pre 1960 homes with good radiators, the boiler still wins on comfort and cost. Either way, the fuel math is where staying on oil bites: NYSERDA's September 2026 survey put Long Island heating oil at $5.48 a gallon, and every point of efficiency gained is money that stays home at that price. Switching fuels is its own project, and our oil to gas conversion page walks through it.
Repair It or Replace It? The 50% Rule in Plain Words
Here is the rule we use in your basement, out loud, with the boiler open in front of you.
More than half, and old, replace. If a repair runs more than half the price of a new boiler and the unit is 15 to 20 years old, that repair is usually money into a dying system. A replacement resets the clock for decades.
Cracked heat exchanger, replace. No math changes that one. You will see the crack yourself before you decide anything.
Second breakdown in one winter, replace. The unit is telling you the order its parts plan to fail in.
Young boiler, one bad part, repair. A circulator on a 9 year old boiler is a repair, full stop. That is what our boiler repair crew is for, and we will tell you to keep your money.
You get both numbers in writing, the repair and the replacement, and you decide. We do both jobs, so the advice does not lean.
What You Can Do Right Now
Get the install quoted while the old boiler still runs. A quote in September is a conversation. A quote in January, with no heat and the kids in coats indoors, is a ransom negotiation, and every installer in Nassau knows it.
Read the nameplate for the year, then ignore its size. The rating plate gives you the age and the fuel. The size is the one number your installer should not copy, because the house changed since that boiler went in: windows, insulation, additions.
Ask every quote the same three questions. Does it include the Village permit? The haul away? On steam, does it include repiping the near boiler piping, or is the new boiler getting married to the old mistakes? The answers separate real quotes from cheap ones. If the old unit is limping while you wait, keep the house at 55 degrees or better, and call +1 (516) 969-2004 to get on the schedule.
What Your Neighbors Say
Every review below is from a real call right here in the Village. Our rating across review sites: 5.0.
They measured every room before they quoted us. The other company wanted to sell us the same size boiler we already had. The new one runs quieter, and the back bedrooms are warm for the first time in ten winters.
Our steam boiler banged like a truck hitting a curb. They repiped the top of the new boiler the way it should have been done in 1962 and the noise stopped. Heat in every room now.
Straight numbers, permit handled, old boiler gone the same day. They walked me through the new controls twice because I asked. No surprises on the bill.
I wanted the combi because it looked modern. They talked me out of it, showed me why two bathrooms would leave us short, and put in a boiler with a tank. Honest people.
Oil tank closed, gas boiler in, and the paperwork was cleaner than the job I did buying the house. Our first winter without an oil delivery schedule.
Recent Work in Hempstead Village
The New Boiler Was Never the Whole Problem
A 1948 two family off Clinton Street ran one pipe steam with radiators that banged hard enough to wake the tenants, and two top floor rooms that never got warm. The boiler was 26 years old with a section starting to weep rust. The first company quoted a budget boiler dropped onto the existing near boiler piping, which sat a full foot lower than the manufacturer allows.
We quoted the boiler and the piping as one job, because on steam they are one job. New cast iron steam boiler at $12,600 all in, sized off the connected radiator load, drop header raised, equalizer and Hartford Loop piped to spec, main vents replaced. Permit pulled first, and both units had heat the same evening.
The banging stopped the first night, because the steam finally stayed dry. Both top floor rooms heat, the tenants renewed, and the owner stopped paying for an emergency call every cold snap. A cheap drop in install would have saved about $2,000 and kept every old problem.
Off Oil, On Gas, One Less Tank to Worry About
A 1952 cape in Parkside heated with a 23 year old oil boiler and a 275 gallon tank in the corner. The burner needed its second repair in a year, oil sat at $5.48 a gallon on the NYSERDA survey, and gas already ran down the street. The owners wanted out before the tank became the emergency.
We priced it in two clean pieces. The conversion work, gas run, permits, witnessed 3.5 psi test, and tank closure under Nassau County rules came to $6,800. The heat is a cast iron gas boiler with an indirect water heater, so two showers and the radiators no longer fight over one appliance. The tank was pumped, cleaned, closed in place, and the county verification letter stayed with the owners.
No more deliveries, no more burner service contract, and hot water that keeps up with a full house. When the house sells one day, the tank paperwork sells with it, the part nobody thinks about until a buyer's attorney asks.
